Q What is a CBT course?
A The CBT is a course of Compulsory Basic Training which must be completed before a learner rider is allowed to ride unaccompanied on the road. Once you have completed your CBT you will be entitled to ride for two years on a motorcycle up to 125cc, (at the age of 16 you can only ride up to a 50cc). You will have to display L-plates, you can not carry passengers and you are not allowed onto motorways. |
Q How old do I need to be to complete a CBT course?
A The minimum age is 16. |
Q Do I need my own motorcycle?
A No - at Surepass we have a wide selection of regularly renewed motorcycles for you to train on. |
Q What if I have never ridden a motorcycle before?
A You are welcome to come down to Surepass for a free, no obligation, trial lesson. As we have our own dedicated training school you will be introduced to motorcycling in a completely enclosed and safe environment. Because the training school is not a public access area, you are able to take this free lesson from 15 years old. These lessons are run seven days a week and you will have to book. |
Q What does the CBT course involve?
A The CBT course is made up of five element
- Introduction
- Practical on-site training
- Practical on-site riding
- Practical on road training
- Practical on road riding (minimum of 2 hours)
Q Is there anything I can do to prepare myself for the CBT course?
A Yes - reading the highway code can be very helpful, especially for young or novice riders. |
Q Do I need to complete the CBT if I am going to do a full licence course?
A Yes you will and the CBT certificate must be valid at the time of your training and practical test. |
Q I have had a full driving licence for many years, do I still need to take a CBT?
A If you obtained your full driving licence before the 1st February 2001 you are automatically entitled to ride a moped (up to 50cc only) without L-Plates and without taking the CBT. We do however recommend you complete some form of training. |
Q What do I need to bring with me on the day?
A You will need to bring your driving licence with you (full or provisional) and if you are using your own motorcycle you will also need to bring proof of insurance and MOT certificate (if required). You must ensure your motorcycle is roadworthy and legal. |
Q How long does the CBT take and how long is it valid for?
A The CBT course takes one whole day and the certificate is valid for 2 years from date of issue. |
Q What happens if I fail the CBT?
A As the CBT is training and not a test you can not fail the course. However, if you are unable to reach a safe standard of riding on the day we will not issue you with a certificate. If this happens we will simply bring you back, free of charge, and run through the course again. Only when you have reached a safe riding standard will you be issued with a certificate. |
Q What happens if I lose my CBT certificate?
A You can apply to Surepass for a duplicate certificate. There is an administration fee for this. We do advise that you look after your certificate safely. |
Q My CBT is about expire, what should I do?
A You can take another CBT immediately, you do not have to leave a period of time between CBT courses. Alternatively, if you have enough time you can complete a full licence course. If you allow your CBT to expire (without taking a full licence course), you are not legally allowed to ride on the road. |
Q What happens if the weather is bad on the day?
A We have a selection of waterproofs at the training school but motorcycle courses are rarely cancelled due to the weather, after all, you won't always be riding in the sunshine! |
Q How do you give me instructions whilst we are riding the motorcycles on the road?
A At Surepass we have superb bike-to-bike communications that allows the instructors to talk clearly to the students. |
