New V5C Document
From the 1st July 2005 the V5 logbook will no longer be valid. The replacement to the V5 is the V5C Registration Certificate, which can be recognised by its bright blue front cover page. The DVLA have been issuing the new V5C to anyone who has taxed their vehicle (using the V11 renewal reminder form) or declared it SORN since January 2004. By now the majority of registered keepers should have received this new certificate. On receipt of the new V5C motorists must destroy their old V5 and check the details on the V5C for any errors.
Failure to have a V5C Registration Certificate could make selling your vehicle difficult, and dealers or private buyers may refuse to purchase your vehicle without one.
If you have not received a V5C for your vehicle you can request one by sending your existing V5 logbook to: DVLA Swansea SA99 1BA, with a covering letter.
For more information on the new V5C Registration Certificate, visit the DVLA website at www.dvla.gov.uk/newrules or contact them on 0870 240 0010
Wording your advert
It's your first point of contact with potential buyers, so it's important the advert conveys the right message. It's amazing how many people get this wrong, and then wonder why the phone isn't ringing…If you need help wording your advert please contact the Surepass team who will be happy to help.
Setting the price
If you get the price wrong, you'll either have your motorcycle on your hands for weeks, or be taken for a mug…neither is desirable, or necessary. A little research will see you easily get the true market value for your motorcycle.
Nowadays, there are plenty of price guides available, either as separate books or incorporated into magazines. But remember they are only a guide.
Visit dealers, to get an idea of your motorcycle’s trade-in value; anything you get over and above that will thus be a profit. Don't, however, look at dealer’s stock and expect to get similar prices for your motorcycle; you're not offering a warranty or any guarantees, and therefore should charge a lot less.
Canvassers
Surepass wants to make clear that it does not pass any customer information on to canvassing companies and that it does not work in partnership with companies of this nature in any way.
Preparing your vehicle for sale
You wouldn't buy a dirty motorcycle so neither will they. The first thing the buyer will notice is the motorcycle’s appearance. Time spent on cleaning your motorcycle will help you get the full asking price.
Get your paper work in order. In a folder, collate all receipts, maintenance records and service history.
Handling calls
Potential buyers will call at any time so try to be available. You may wish to leave day/night time numbers or a mobile number.
Show documentation of proof of ownership, maintenance records, the owner's manual, service history, and registration.
Negotiating a price
It's human nature to want to pay a lower price, so have clear in your mind the lowest price you'll be happy with. Don't be pushed into agreeing a lower price; if you are not sure take their phone number and call them back later.
If the buyer is genuinely interested ask them to leave a deposit, this helps weed out any time wasters.
Keep all numbers of interested parties in case your buyer pulls out at the last minute.
Taking payment
Do not hand anything over until payment has been made and cheques have cleared.
Cash is best. If you do take a cheque make sure it's verified.
Write a receipt for both you and the buyer, stating that the motorcycle is being sold.
