THEORY TEST

The motorcycle theory test is designed to test the "what you know" side of motorcycling rather than your riding ability.

The motorcycle theory test is £28.50 and is completed with the Driving Standards Agency. You can book this yourself either by telephoning 0870 0101 372 or by clicking on the link below. Alternatively you can telephone Surepass who will happy to book your theory test for you.

The motorcycle theory test is made up of two parts; the multiple choice part and the hazard perception part. The multiple choice part is delivered using a touch screen computer and mouse and the hazard perception part records your responses through the use of a computer mouse button.

You will need to pass both parts of the theory test. Fail one part and you will need to complete the whole test again (another test fee and booking is required).

Multiple Choice

You will be given instructions at the start of the test on how the test works. You can opt to complete a short practice session which can help you get used to the layout of the test. At the end of the practice test the real test will begin.

A question with various answer options will appear on screen. You must respond accordingly. Some questions may require more than one answer.
You will be asked 35 questions in 40 minutes. If you are having difficulty with a question you can move on to another question and come back to the difficult one later.

The pass mark for the multiple choice section is 30 out of 35 questions.

After the multiple choice test you will be given a break of up to 3 minutes before the hazard perception part starts.

Hazard Perception

You will be shown a short tutorial video about how this part of the test works.

This is also delivered on a computer and you must respond by clicking the button on the mouse. You will be shown 14 short video clips featuring everyday road scenes. In each clip there is at least one developing hazard but one of the clips will have two developing hazards.

To achieve a high score you will need to respond to the developing hazard during the early part of its development. The maximum you can score on each hazard is five points. You will not be able to review your answers to this part of the test; as in a real life situation, you will only have one chance to respond to the developing hazard.

The pass mark for the hazard perception test is 44 out of 75.
